Year 4 have been busy scientists this week, carrying out a fascinating experiment using boiled eggs to represent teeth.
As part of our learning about teeth and dental health, the children placed boiled eggs into five different liquids: water, orange juice, vinegar, full-fat coke and milk. The eggshells represented tooth enamel, helping us to investigate how different drinks can affect our teeth over time.
After leaving the eggs to soak, the children were excited to observe the results. Some of the eggs had become stained, some shells felt rough and the vinegar had a very surprising effect, turning the shell rubbery! The orange juice also had a dramatic impact, as it began to break down the eggshell.
As our experiment took place during the heatwave, we also noticed some rather unpleasant changes! The milk had curdled and the orange juice had become especially smelly, so we decided it was best to complete our final observations outside.
Although it was a rather stinky afternoon, it was also a brilliant learning experience. Year 4 now have a much better understanding of why looking after our teeth is so important.
Well done, Year 4, for your fantastic scientific observations and curiosity!
