During today's English lesson, Year 5 were told that they would be studying a new genre. A genre is a ''type'' or style of writing, which contains common themes.

Children were given 5 photographs all linked to the unidentified theme. Their job was to look really closely at the photos for any clues about the genre. They worked together, discussed and then labelled what they could see, what they noticed and what they thought each photo was showing them.

After lots of discussion, Year 5 discovered their genre for this half term was Science Fiction (Sci-Fi). Clues such as aliens, spaceships, robots and futuristic landscapes all helped Year 5 reach their conclusion. Over the next few weeks, we will be reading a range of Sci-Fi texts and children will eventually create their own alien/futuristic setting and characters, retelling a story from the alien character's perspective.
