Today, four Year 5 children attended the Final of the Maths Challenge organised by Burnley FC in the Community.
Back in November, our Maths team came 3rd in our heat which qualified us for the Final which took place today. The final was hosted at Turf Moor and we had a jam-packed day with Maths and STEM activities, a tour of the stadium and some fun quick-fire Maths games too.
Children began their day with a tour of the grounds. Not only were we allowed an all-access tour around the stands, being able to see the dug-outs and the pitch we were also allowed to go into the press room and the interview room too. On our tour, we were given lots of facts about the seats, the number of players who have played for England, the size of the pitch, the capacity as well as lots of other interesting facts. We had to use our listening skills to record some of these facts as answers to quiz questions.
After our tour, children took part in a Maths themed Blooket. An interactive quiz full of reasoning questions. Our four children worked really hard as some of these questions were very challenging. They listened really closely to one another and worked collaboratively to achieve success here. After the quiz, children took part in a relay. They had to run to a Maths question, quickly work it out and then run back to tag in the next child. Again, some of these questions were really tricky and children did incredibly well during this round.
Then, it was time for lunch! Next, children took part in 2 STEM activities. They used Indi devices which have a colour sensor. Once it travels over a coloured tile, the device turned, span or stopped. Children had to create a path using different coloured tiles. This was so much fun and we loved this activity! Then, we used rovers. Again, children had to programme and remotely control them but this time, we were programming them to kick footballs into nets.
After all these activities, we took part in a game of It's A Knock Out (where we scored a PERFECT 100 points). Finally, we took part in a quick 5 minute mental maths test. Children managed to answer every question they attempted correctly.
Scores were collated and prizes were given out. Although we did not win the competition, children were a real credit. They were polite, engaged and full of enthusiasm all day. We are really proud of our Maths team!
