To celebrate Book Week in school, children have been focusing on Shona, The Word Detective. Children have been learning about the etymology and morphology of words. Looking at where words originated from and how they are ''built''. Children were fascinated to learn that the ''English'' language is actually a mixture of lots of other languages around the world.

Their first task was to match words to their origins such as pavlova, sandwich and aqua.

Children were then introduced to several endangered words or words that are slowly disappearing from the English language. Their task was to research the origins of the words and also their meaning.

Our next mission, is to persuade others to keep these words alive! So if you hear Year 5 using words like lacksadasical, groak and snollygoster- this is why!
