The planting fun has begun, and our spuds are in their tubs! As part of the ‘Grow Your Own Potatoes’ (GYOP) project, the children are learning where their food comes from, getting hands-on with every step – from planting to harvesting and enjoying their very own crops. And yes, we can’t wait to turn them into some delicious garlic roasties!
A big well done to our Reception children, who carefully set the seed potatoes up for chitting last term. Today, members of our Year 2 Garden Gang joined forces with the Gardening Club, guided by our Year 6 Head Gardener, to plant them into tubs. They did a brilliant job, and the potatoes are now tucked up in the soil ready to grow.
To celebrate British Science Week, we’re also taking part in a fun ‘Beneath the Soil’ experiment, growing a seed potato in a clear container so we can observe what usually happens out of sight. The children will be able to watch the roots develop and see how the potato plant grows beneath the soil – science in action!
A huge thank you to Grow Your Own Potatoes and their sponsors for providing the seed potatoes and making this wonderful learning opportunity possible. We’ll be sharing updates as our potato-growing journey unfolds!
