In our EYFS, children have been developing their early mathematical skills by exploring length through a series of hands-on measurement challenges. Using interconnecting plastic cubes, the children eagerly investigated the vocabulary of size, actively comparing objects to determine which were long, short, or longer. When using their concrete resources, they practiced making smart guesses, estimating exactly how many cubes they would need or how many more they would need to match the length of various objects. They then carefully placed the cubes side-by-side, counting each item with precision. To extend their learning, some children took their own learning on in an exciting final challenge: counting the total number of cubes required to fit all the way around the outside of a whole shape, giving them a brilliant, practical introduction to measuring boundaries.
