We’re delighted to share that we are now working on our final action towards achieving our Food for Life Silver Award!
As part of this project, the children have been learning about food production and researching local food businesses to discover where our food comes from and the journey it takes before reaching our plates.
The children chose to follow the journey of locally made pork sausages. Along the way, they researched pigs and how they are reared, before learning all about sausage production with the incredible support of David at Ingham’s Butchers, Foulridge. David went above and beyond to explain how their sausages are made, where the pork comes from and the important role local butchers play in supporting British farming. Thank you, David, for your fantastic support throughout this project.
Our journey then continued to our wonderful Trawden Community Shop, where the children discovered the important role the shop plays within our village. They learned about the wide range of locally produced items available to buy, including jams, butter, milk, honey, crisps and even locally made honey.
A huge thank you goes to Angela, who went above and beyond by answering all of the children’s carefully prepared research questions. We also discovered that the shop has recently been awarded the Rural Community Business Award 2026 – a fantastic and well-deserved achievement. Congratulations to everyone involved!
The final stage of our farm-to-fork journey saw the children purchasing the sausages from the Community Shop before returning to school, where they cooked them on the fire pit during Gardening Club. It was the perfect way to celebrate everything they had learned – and, judging by the smiles, the hot dogs were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone!
By working together with our fantastic local businesses, the children have experienced the complete journey of a locally produced food from farm to fork. It has been a wonderful way to bring their learning to life as we work towards achieving our Food for Life Silver Award.
