Our little red wheelbarrow was back in action this week as a group of our Reception Garden Gang children headed up to the school garden with Mrs Nelson for a very exciting autumn job - pumpkin harvesting!
The children had great fun exploring the garden and discovering what had been growing, before heading into the polytunnel to find our pumpkins ready to harvest. They did a fantastic job picking them and loading their harvest into the little red wheelbarrow. And we’re not finished yet - we still have another couple of vines full of little pumpkins waiting to be harvested!
Some of our pumpkins have an extra-special story behind them. Once again, they have been grown from seed that we saved ourselves, continuing the story that began with ‘Jack’, the pumpkin from our Pumpkin Jack story and decomposition experiment.
The children counted their harvest and, of course, chose one very important pumpkin to become our new ‘Jack’. He will begin the pumpkin lifecycle all over again as the children watch what happens to him over the coming months.
Some of our beautiful school-grown pumpkins and squashes have now made their way to the school library, where they are part of our autumn harvest display, and one will soon be transformed into some delicious pumpkin hummus for the children to taste!
From planting seeds to harvesting a wheelbarrow full of pumpkins, there has been so much learning along the way - and plenty of autumn fun too!
